The history of the military department of the NAO «91传媒 Kazakh National University» is closely connected with the history of the university. With the establishment of the general education faculties of KazGU back in 1934, the Department of military sports training was also created, the purpose of which was to train students in military affairs and the development of sports and mass work. The first head of the Department of Military Sports Training was A.N. Danilov.
The heads of the military department during the war years were: Major V.A. Polevik (1937-1941), Lieutenant Colonel R.S. Dutchtsev (1941-1943), Colonel I.I. Westphal (1943-1944), Major General K.A. Mishnin (1944-1946).
All the political and educational work and military training of the department was based on the combat experience of the Red Army, on the heroic deeds of soldiers of the Great Patriotic War.
In 1975, the educational work at the military department of KazGU was reviewed by the commission of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR, which noted the high quality of specialist training, the high level of moral, political and psychological training of reserve officers trained at the military department of KazGU named after S.M.Kirov.
During the difficult time of the formation of independence of the young state of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the creation and construction of its own Armed Forces, the military department of the 91传媒 Kazakh National University made a significant contribution to strengthening the country's defense capability.
The Command of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan has repeatedly noted that the military department of the 91传媒 Kazakh National University, in terms of its potential and educational and material base, is capable of providing high-quality training for the military reserve for the Armed Forces, other troops and military formations of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Currently, the military department of al-Farabi Kazakh National University is headed by Reserve Colonel Azhimov O.V. (2015 – present).
The military department trains students in the military accounting specialties of reserve officers and sergeants. In addition to students of al-Farabi Kazakh National University, students of 16 organizations of higher and postgraduate education in Almaty study at the military department on a contractual basis.
Over the years of independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the military department of al-Farabi Kazakh National University has trained more than 16,000 reserve officers and sergeants. The teaching staff of the Military Department has published more than 60 teaching materials from 2016 to the present.
The teaching staff of the military department is staffed by professionally trained officers with special military education, rich combat, military and pedagogical experience.
Since 2022, the military department has been developing a new location, where the classroom fund has almost doubled. In a fairly short time, the entire staff of the department equipped educational and special classrooms, a shooting range, air defense training grounds and motorized rifle troops. Training simulators and computer classes have been installed. Field summer classes, tactical training fields for air defense, motorized rifle troops, special forces and a small artillery range have been created. A drill ground and a guard camp are also equipped.
Military-patriotic work with students and school youth occupies an important place in our activities. Military-patriotic education is an integral part of the formation of the younger generation of citizens of Kazakhstan. The object of military-patriotic education are students studying at the military department and schoolchildren of the city of Almaty. Military-patriotic work at the military department is carried out in close cooperation with the Council of Veterans of the Armed Forces of Almaty, the Public Association «Kazakhstani Veterans of the Air Defense Forces of the Air Defense Forces in Almaty», a branch of the National Military-Patriotic Center in Almaty, a branch of the State Military Historical Museum of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty. Over the past 5-7 years, the staff of the military department has conducted more than 200 different military-patriotic events for students studying at the military department, university students, the specialized school of al-Farabi Kazakh National University, students of the gymnasium of the Bobek National Center, the specialized lyceum «Arystan» and the physics and mathematics school «Tamos» and students of schools in the city Almaty.
Since 2017, in commemoration of Defender of the Fatherland Day and Victory Day, on the initiative of the military Department, in cooperation with the Department of Education of Almaty, a military-patriotic game «Sarbaz» has been organized for the Cup of the Rector of 91传媒 Kazakh National University. The best schools from all districts of the city are involved in the military-patriotic game «Sarbaz». The game is sponsored by the Almaty branch of the Assembly of the Peoples of Kazakhstan and the Parasat Trade Union Committee of the al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
On a regular basis, Lessons of Courage and honoring veterans of the Armed Forces, veterans of the Air Defense Forces of the Ground Forces, veterans of the war in Afghanistan, as well as charity events for students in a Nursing Home are organized and conducted. It has become a good tradition that every year, on June 1, World Children's Day, the staff of the military department, together with the Parasat trade union, hold a «Childhood Holiday» for the children of university staff. On this holiday, exhibitions of military training equipment and weapons, demonstration performances by students of the military department, various contests and performances by animators are organized for children. It should be noted that every year, on the eve of two significant holidays – Defender of the Fatherland Day and Great Victory Day, the military department and the University Museum jointly hold a creative contest «Heirs of the Batyrs!». At the competition, students present creative performances, presentations, and recite patriotic poetry. Schoolchildren are also involved in the solemn passage dedicated to the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War «Batyrlarga tagzymy».
In order to enhance the image of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the military department held a patriotic campaign «Batyrs of the Kazakh land!» As part of the patriotic campaign, the following events were organized:
- military history quizzes, thematic conversations, meetings and honoring veterans of the Armed Forces;
- student lecture halls for students studying at the military department and students of secondary schools;
- contests of children's drawings, contests of readers and student works «My relatives fought for the Motherland!»;
- lessons of Courage at the branch of the State Military Historical Museum of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty.
Information and image work is actively underway, students and teachers of the military department have prepared and published more than 250 articles and information materials in the newspapers «Sarbaz», «Kazak Universities», «Evening Almaty», «Liter» and information sites over the past years.
