KazNU Rector Summarized the Year’s Results

At 91ý Kazakh National University, a meeting of the Academic Council was held, during which two important issues were considered: strengthening the university’s position in the QS World University Rankings and developing its digital infrastructure.

At the final Academic Council meeting of the calendar year, Chairman of the Board – Rector of 91ý Kazakh National University, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, presented the main results of the year, noting the extensive work accomplished by the university staff.

The head of the university emphasized that KazNU has recently undergone significant modernization of its innovation infrastructure. Fifty modern laboratories have been opened, attracting investments totaling $110 million. A landmark event was the establishment of Farabi Hub, a platform for the development of high-tech projects and startups. A supercomputer cluster, equipped with one of the world’s 600 supercomputers and possessing enormous capabilities, has also been launched and is functioning successfully.

KazNU’s infrastructure has been expanded with modern centers and laboratories such as the Farabi Robotics Center, the International Institute of Digital Technologies and Robotics, the PolyU-KazNU Sustainable Development Center for Central Asia, the Brain Institute, the BASF Mining Solutions laboratory, the Cytomatrix Research Center, and the Drone Development Workshop, among others. In December of this year, the “Kazakhstan–China” nanosatellite, jointly developed by Northwestern Polytechnical University and 91ý Kazakh National University, was launched into an orbit at an altitude of 530 km.

In the future, efforts should focus on systematic work to strengthen the university’s international academic reputation, expand scientific and educational partnerships, and actively introduce digital solutions into educational and administrative activities. The Rector noted that only through coordinated work by all departments and the involvement of faculty and staff will the university be able to strengthen its position and continue its confident development.

A report on the university’s продвижение in the QS ranking was delivered by Zhandos Baizhuma, Director of the Strategic Development Center, with Aida Kistaubayeva, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, serving as co-speaker.

The participants of the meeting were presented with a work plan for participation in QS WUR 2027. The survey of international academic experts and employers will continue until March 2026, the submission of the university’s data to the QS HUB platform is scheduled by February 12, 2026, and the ranking results will be announced in June 2026.

Analytics were also presented, on the basis of which the university evaluates its position and builds forecasts. For this purpose, data from rankings such as QS, Times Higher Education, Scopus, and SciVal, as well as modern analytical and digital tools, are used. Speaker Zhandos Baizhuma noted that this approach makes it possible to understand which steps have the greatest impact on KazNU’s position in international rankings.

Special attention was given to academic reputation. In the QS 2025 survey, 348 international experts took part, and as a result KazNU ranked 166th. For the following year, the goal is to increase the number of experts to 500. As the speakers noted, increasing the university’s recognition among foreign scholars is one of the key factors for growth in the QS ranking.

During the discussion, issues related to the development of international scientific ties were also addressed. Today, KazNU closely cooperates with more than 620 universities worldwide and plans to more actively develop sustainable international collaborations and increase the number of joint scientific publications. Leading multidisciplinary universities that consistently rank in the QS Top 150 have been chosen as benchmarks.

To strengthen KazNU’s scientific potential, various approaches are being considered, such as developing research personnel, attracting leading scholars, and expanding international and corporate partnerships. The presented forecasts show that a balanced combination of these measures yields the best results.

The second item on the agenda of the meeting was devoted to KazNU’s digital development. A report was delivered by Makhmut Tomanov, Director of the Department of Information Technologies, with Nurislam Kassymbek, Head of the Department of Computer Science, serving as co-speaker.

The participants of the meeting were informed about the current state of the university’s IT infrastructure and plans for its further development.
