The Farabi Hub Center for Innovative Products and High-tech Projects of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the large-scale Senate Open 2026 chess tournament among healthcare system employees.

The event provoked a wide response among the professional community: 135 participants representing key medical institutions and organizations of the industry met at the chessboards.

Bakytzhan Omarov, Member of the Board and ViceRector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech. He stressed that chess and medicine have a lot in common: both areas require extreme concentration, the ability to calculate moves in advance and take responsibility for every decision.

The opening ceremony was also attended by Marat Yesenov, Vice-President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, Sayat Egenberdiev, Regional Director of the Federation, and others.

As a sign of strengthening partnerships, a modern chess robot with artificial intelligence was handed over to the university. The unique equipment will be integrated into the educational process and training base of the university, opening up new opportunities for students to master AI algorithms and improve sports skills.

The tournament was held in an atmosphere of fierce but respectful competition. Based on the results of intense games, the 20 strongest players were identified. It was these prize-winners who received the right to defend the honor of the medical community in the second stage of the Senate Open qualifying tournament, which will also be hosted by the city of Almaty.
