Presentation of the book "The travels of Marco Polo" took place in KazNU

A solemn presentation of the book "The travels of Marco Polo" translated from medieval Italian into Kazakh, took place at the al-Farabi Kazakh National University with the participation of scientists from the University of Ca'Foscari.

The event was attended by the leadership of KazNU, Vice Rector of Ca'Foscari University Antonio Marcomini, Professor Elisabetta Ragagnin, cultural attache of the Italian Embassy in Kazakhstan, Director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Kazakhstan Edoardo Crisafulli, as well as scientists and students of the University.

Opening the solemn event, Alina Galeeva, Member of the Board and ViceRector for Academic Affairs of KazNU, noted the scientific and spiritual significance of the project. "The first direct translation of Marco Polo's work from medieval Italian into Kazakh is an important event for Kazakh science and the spiritual sphere. This project is a vivid result of scientific and cultural cooperation between Kazakhstan and Italy".

 

In turn, Vice Rector Antonio Marcomini emphasized the historical and academic value of the publication, expressing confidence in the further development of joint initiatives. He thanked the KazNU staff for the high level of organization of the event and stressed that the partnership between the universities will acquire a new meaningful content.

Also during the event, scientists made presentations on the topics: "World heritage Marco Polo in Kazakhstan: the translation of the work "Milione" into Kazakh", "The legacy of Marco Polo, revived at the junction of cultures", "Turkic-Mongolian toponyms in the book of Marco Polo", revealing in detail the historical and linguistic value of the work. The researchers noted that the Kazakh edition is not just a translation, but a fundamental scientific work that comprehensively reveals historical, geographical and ethnographic information about medieval Eurasia.

During the presentation, several copies of the book were donated to the university's scientific library.

It should be recalled that "The travels of Marco Polo" is considered one of the first works that systematically introduced Europe to the countries and cities of the Great Silk Road. The author provided valuable information about Turkestan and Mongolia, China and India, island territories, as well as about the way of life of the peoples, their traditions, religion, trade routes and natural resources.
