A round table meeting on the topic "Referendum - an institution of direct democracy" was held at the al–Farabi Kazakh National University.

The meeting participants conducted a comprehensive analysis of the legal nature of the referendum and its role in modern constitutional processes.

The event, organized by the Department of Customs, Financial and Environmental Law of the Faculty of Law, was attended by representatives of legal science, scientists, government officials, faculty and students.

The event was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Ualikhan Akhatov. In his speech, the Dean noted the importance of the referendum in the political system of the state and stressed the need to improve the mechanisms of direct participation of the population.

In turn, Professor Guldana Kuanalieva, Head of the Department of Customs, Financial and Environmental Law, highlighted the importance of the round table meeting.

At the meeting, the participants discussed the legal nature of the institution of a referendum, its role in the system of direct democracy and its importance in modern constitutional and legal development. In addition, the legal basis for holding a referendum, international experience, mechanisms of political participation of citizens and issues of improving national legislation were considered.

Also at the meeting, legal scholars, in particular Saida Asanova, Yerbol Alimkulov, Kanat Kozhabek, Bakhytzhan Kalymbek, Galym Teleuev, Gulnur Rasheva, Aynash Yesekeyeva and Sabyrzhan Zhapakov, comprehensively discussed the legal basis of the referendum, issues of constitutional modernization and strengthening human rights guarantees in their reports.

Following the event, the participants prepared recommendations aimed at further developing the institution of the referendum, and emphasized its importance in building a democratic state.
