An Open Lecture on “The Cognitive and Educational Nature of Proverbs and Sayings” Held at KazNU within the Framework of Teaching Practice
On March 2, 2026, an open lecture was held at the Faculty of History of Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi as part of the teaching practice of Laila A. Makhambetova, a first-year PhD student of the 8D02211 – “Ethnology and Anthropology” educational program. The lecture was delivered within the course “Ethnography and Folklore: Theory of Historical-Comparative Studies.” The topic of the lecture was “The Cognitive and Educational Nature of Proverbs and Sayings.” The event was organized for first-year Master’s students of the 7M02220 – “Ethnology and Anthropology” program. 777 777During the lecture, the historical foundations, scholarly research, and educational significance of proverbs and sayings as a valuable part of Kazakh cultural heritage were comprehensively examined. In the theoretical part of the presentation, the distinction between a proverb and a saying was clarified. It was emphasized that a proverb represents a generalized idea derived from life experience, whereas a saying is a figurative fixed expression used in a particular context. Special attention was paid to the issue of historical continuity. It was noted that the origins of Kazakh proverbs and sayings date back to ancient Turkic written monuments, particularly the Kultegin inscriptions7and7the7Tonyukuk7inscriptions,7which7contain7proverb-likе constructions. . ... 777Aphoristic statements found in medieval works such as Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk and Kutadgu Bilig were also analyzed. While discussing the stages of collecting and studying proverbs and sayings, particular attention was given to the contributions of Shokan Valikhanov, Ybyrai Altynsarin, and Abubakir Divaev. It was also highlighted that Mukhtar Auezov provided an in-depth scholarly analysis of proverbs and sayings, revealing their national specificity and poetic structure. The central focus of the lecture was the educational value of folk wisdom. Issues such as child upbringing, parental responsibility, morality, honor, and dignity were explored through proverbial expressions. Folk aphorisms demonstrated the vitality and contemporary relevance of traditional7educational7principles. 777The event was organized within the framework of teaching practice and constitutes an integral part of the academic process aimed at developing the research potential of young scholars and enhancing the professional competencies of Master’s students.
