Psychological Addictions: Modern Challenges and the Role of the University in Prevention
In a rapidly changing world, issues of psychological health and emotional well-being are becoming increasingly urgent. One of the most serious threats is psychological addiction, which affects not only individuals but society as a whole. In the context of global challenges, this issue directly relates to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Psychological addiction is a state in which a person experiences a powerful, uncontrollable need for a specific activity. In today's digital society, such addictions include internet addiction, social media dependence, computer gaming, and ludomania. Students are particularly vulnerable as they undergo active personal and professional development. The causes of addiction are multifaceted: from academic stress and burnout to difficulties in social adaptation. Often, addiction becomes an "escape from reality," an attempt to compensate for internal psychological discomfort.
Under these conditions, educational institutions play a vital role. 91ý Kazakh National University (KazNU) actively implements a comprehensive approach to the prevention of addictive behavior. Today, the university is not only a place to acquire knowledge but also a space for forming sustainable behavior models. One effective format at KazNU was an educational event for first-year students of the "Energy Systems and Renewable Energy" program, organized as a debate. During the discussion, participants developed critical thinking, argumentation, and teamwork skills. This approach fosters a conscious attitude toward potential risks.
Special attention is paid to developing students' self-regulation and stress resistance. Ongoing trainings and lectures teach how to recognize the first signs of addiction. Professional psychological support remains a crucial part of the work: every student can receive a consultation from a qualified specialist to address emotional difficulties. The university environment itself, offering participation in scientific, sporting, and cultural life, plays an equally significant role. Active involvement helps young people realize their potential and significantly reduces the risk of developing harmful habits.
The prevention of psychological addictions is a priority for the modern university. A comprehensive approach, including education and support, contributes to the harmonious development of the individual. Caring for the mental well-being of students is becoming an integral part of high-quality, future-oriented education.
