Towards Sustainable Development: The Contribution of the Academic Community of 91ý KazNU to the Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals
On April 4, 2026, faculty and students of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics actively participated in university-wide cleanup event. The event became a shining example of the academic community uniting around the idea of environmental responsibility, civic engagement, and respect for the environment.
The cleanup event was held in an atmosphere of unity and mutual support: participants cleared the campus of accumulated trash and carried out a number of agricultural activities. Specifically, they pruned old and damaged shrub branches, creating favorable conditions for their active growth and abundant flowering during the spring and summer period.
These works are important not only from an aesthetic perspective, contributing to the improvement and landscaping of the area, but also from an environmental perspective, improving the phytosanitary condition of the plants, increasing their resilience to adverse environmental factors, and contributing to the preservation of the campus's biodiversity.
The event is particularly significant in the context of the implementation of the UN SDGs. Contribution to SDG-3, "Good Health and Well-Being," is manifested in the creation of an environmentally safe and clean environment that directly impacts the physical and psycho-emotional well-being of students and staff. Implementation of SDG-11, "Sustainable Cities and Communities," is reflected in improving the quality of city and campus infrastructure and creating comfortable and environmentally friendly spaces. As part of SDG-12, "Responsible Consumption and Production," participants demonstrate practices for rational waste management, reducing anthropogenic impact, and conscious resource consumption. A significant contribution to SDG-13 "Climate Action" lies in the maintenance and development of green spaces, which act as natural carbon sinks and help to reduce air pollution. Furthermore, the event indirectly addresses SDG-15 "Life on Land," as vegetation maintenance, including sanitary pruning of shrubs, is aimed at maintaining healthy ecosystems, preventing the degradation of green spaces, and preserving their ecological functions.
Since 2016, KazNU has been participating annually in the World Ranking of "Green Universities" (UI Green Metric World Ranking Universities). The cleanup day symbolically coincided with the period of spring renewal. After a long winter, the environment seems to awaken anew, filled with vital energy and freshness. This is a time of natural cleansing and rebirth, inspiring creative work and inner renewal.
This temporal coincidence cannot fail to inspire us all to selfless work for the good of our homeland. The New Constitution, adopted during the Nauryz celebrations, formulates a caring attitude toward nature as one of the fundamental principles and values of society.
At the initiative of the President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, a large-scale environmental campaign is being implemented in the Republic of Kazakhstan, aligned with the "Taza Kazakhstan" Environmental Culture Development Concept for 2024-2029. Its goal is not only to improve the environmental situation but also to foster environmentally responsible thinking, develop patriotism, and increase public engagement in environmental issues.
More and more citizens are choosing an eco-friendly lifestyle, consuming resources rationally, and actively participating in environmental initiative - and this is the foundation for the country's sustainable future. Such initiatives not only improve the university environment but also instill in young people sustainable environmental values that align with modern global trends in sustainable development.
In this regard, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics calls on all Kazakhstanis to join the cleanliness and order relay race, contributing to environmental conservation and the development of the country's environmental culture.
