Scientific Activity of the Department of Botany and Agroecology within the Framework of the International Scientific Conference “Farabi Alemi – 2026”

On April 7, 2026, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of al-Farabi Kazakh National University hosted the traditional International Scientific Conference of Students and Young Scientists “Farabi Alemi” at a high organizational level. The conference was aimed at supporting the research activities of young scholars, presenting the results of their scientific work, and promoting academic dialogue on current issues in modern biology. The program included plenary and sectional sessions.

During the opening ceremony, the faculty administration and heads of departments delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the importance of fostering the scientific potential of young people and strengthening research culture. Among the speakers was Professor N.Z. Akhtayeva, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Head of the Department of Botany and Agroecology. Representatives of the Department of Botany and Agroecology also served on the organizing committee of the conference, reflecting the department’s significant role in the scientific and organizational life of the faculty.

The conference program was extensive and content-rich. The plenary session featured presentations on the green extraction of plant raw materials using supercritical CO₂ and on the mycobiota of the Irtysh River floodplain in the Abay Region. In particular, Ruslan Nurkhanov, a second-year master’s student of the Department of Botany and Agroecology, delivered a plenary presentation entitled “Mycobiota of the Irtysh River Floodplain in the Abay Region.” This highlights the relevance and academic quality of the research conducted within the department. According to the conference program, plenary reports were allocated 15–20 minutes, while sectional presentations were limited to 5–7 minutes. The working languages of the conference were Kazakh, Russian, and English.

A particularly important part of the conference was Section 1: “Innovations in Botany and Agroecology.” The session was held in the Botany classroom and chaired by Professor N.Z. Akhtayeva. The moderators included Associate Professor A.T. Mamurova,  Professor  S.T. Nazarbekova, Professor Z.A. Inelova, PhD Acting Associate Professor A.Zh. Childibayeva, and PhD Senior Lecturer K.T. Abidkulova. The secretary of the section was Leading Specialist A. Egen.

The section covered a wide range of relevant topics in botany, agroecology, soil science, plant ecology, the condition of aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity, and the scientific assessment of natural resources. The presentations addressed the distribution and significance of species of the genus Anabasis in the arid ecosystems of Kazakhstan, the level of heavy metals in light chestnut soils of Southeastern Kazakhstan, the study of diatoms on different substrates, the hydrochemical condition of the Talas River, mobile forms of trace elements in irrigated soils, and the morphological and ecological features of various plant species. The range of topics demonstrated the interdisciplinary nature of the department’s research activity.

According to the available materials, 63 abstracts were accepted for Section 1, including 46 abstracts from al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the rest from other higher education institutions in Kazakhstan and abroad. These included Astana International University, Kazakh State Women’s Pedagogical University, Shakarim University, Alikhan Bokeikhan University, S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University, M.H. Dulaty Taraz University, International Engineering and Technological University, Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University, S. Seifullin Agrotechnical Research University, Akhmet Baitursynuly Kostanay Regional University, Mirzo Ulugbek National University of Uzbekistan, Kokand State University, and the Tashkent Pharmaceutical Institute. This confirms both the broad academic interest in the section and its international scope.

A total of 13 presentations were delivered during the section meeting. Based on the results of the session, the best reports were awarded diplomas. The First Degree Diploma was awarded to Ruslan Nurkhanov, a second-year master’s student of al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Second Degree Diplomas were awarded to E. Akylbekova, R. Isagulova, and A. Abdybayeva. Third Degree Diplomas were awarded to A. Zhaksylyk, Sh.S. Kalybay, M.T. Tynyshbay, and E.M. Turarova. Certificates were presented to all active participants of the conference.

Overall, the International Scientific Conference “Farabi Alemi – 2026” once again confirmed its importance as an effective academic platform for supporting the scientific initiatives of students and young researchers. Within the framework of this event, the Department of Botany and Agroecology demonstrated both strong organizational engagement and active scientific participation, presenting relevant research topics and ensuring the successful work of its профильная section. The section made a meaningful contribution to the development of students’ research potential and to the discussion of current issues in botany and agroecology.
