As part of SDG 13, an educational seminar on "Climate Literacy and Environmental Responsibility" was held at the Botanical Garden.

1.    Sustainable Development Goal (SDG): Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

2.    Event title: Climate Literacy and Environmental Responsibility

3.    Date and format: April 13, 2026, offline field seminar at the Botanical Garden

4.    Responsible faculty: Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, Departments of Biophysics, Biomedicine and Neuroscience

5.    Event partners: Main Botanical Garden of Almaty

6.    Objective of the event: To develop climate literacy, increase awareness of the causes and consequences of climate change, and promote environmentally responsible behavior and sustainable habits among students.

7.    Brief description of the event: An off-site educational seminar titled “Climate Literacy and Environmental Responsibility” was held at the Botanical Garden for first-year students (Russian and Kazakh divisions) majoring in Neuroscience. The main objective was to deepen students’ understanding of climate change, its impact on ecosystems and human health, and to develop practical skills for environmentally responsible behavior.

The seminar was conducted in an interactive format with elements of field-based learning. In the first part, participants were introduced to key scientific data on global climate change, anthropogenic environmental factors, and their consequences for biodiversity and ecosystems. Special attention was given to the role of plant ecosystems in climate regulation and maintaining ecological balance.

In the second part, students participated in discussions and outdoor practical activities aimed at developing ecological thinking. Issues such as reducing carbon footprint, rational use of natural resources, and implementing sustainable practices in everyday life were discussed. The event concluded with the slogan “Think globally – act locally!”, and participants expressed their willingness to apply the acquired knowledge in practice.

8.    Number of participants: Instructor Iskakova D.M. and first-year bachelor students (Russian and Kazakh divisions)

9.    Results and impact of the event: The seminar contributed to achieving SDG 13 “Climate Action” by increasing students’ knowledge of climate processes, their impact on natural and biological systems, and strategies for adaptation and mitigation. Indicators related to environmental education, sustainable thinking, and responsible environmental behavior were strengthened.

10.    The event promoted the development of environmental culture, critical thinking, and practical skills for sustainable decision-making. For the university, such initiatives strengthen its position in sustainable development, enhance interdisciplinary education, and increase its contribution to the implementation of global SDGs.
