Students of the “Ecology” program completed an internship at the Institute of Zoology

Students of the “Ecology” educational program of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development successfully completed their internship at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan, one of the leading research centers in the country specializing in the study of wildlife and biodiversity conservation.

During the internship, students consolidated their theoretical knowledge and applied it in real research conditions. The main goal of the internship was to familiarize students with the institute’s scientific activities, learn research methods used by zoologists and entomologists, and develop analytical and research skills.

At the initial stage, students were introduced to the structure of the institute, its key research areas, and current challenges related to biodiversity. Particular attention was given to the study of animal populations, ecosystem dynamics, and the impact of anthropogenic factors and climate change.

As part of the practical training, students completed tasks related to the preparation and preservation of entomological materials. They produced cotton pads for insect storage, prepared containers for scientific collections, and learned classification and preservation techniques—skills essential for future research activities.

The internship also contributed to the development of research and communication competencies. Students prepared and presented scientific reports on various insect groups, including beetles, butterflies, bees, and ants. In addition, they created video projects about animals inhabiting Kazakhstan. One of the projects focused on the saiga antelope, highlighting its biological features, habitat, and conservation issues.

As part of the program, students also visited the U.U. Uspanov Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry, where they learned about soil research methods and their importance for ecosystems and biodiversity.

Overall, the internship significantly contributed to the development of key professional competencies, including data analysis, critical thinking, public speaking, teamwork, and time management.

The experience allowed students to better understand the importance of scientific research in biodiversity conservation, environmental monitoring, and raising environmental awareness in society.

The knowledge and professional skills acquired by students during the internship in the fields of biodiversity study and conservation, environmental monitoring, and scientific research correspond to the priority areas of the Central Asian-German Institute for the protection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity under the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences and will contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of its scientific and practical activities.
