At the Department of Plasma Physics, Nanotechnology and Computer Physics, an educational and awareness-raising event titled “Social Media – Benefit or Harm?” was organized for first-year students of the “Physics and Nanotechnology” educational program by Assistant Professors Gabdullina G.L., Tazhen A.B., Kenzhebekova A.I., along with graduate students Nazarbek N.N., Kyrgyzbay A.D., and Kuralbay A.T.
The main objective of the event was to promote a comprehensive understanding of the role of social media in modern society, develop students’ critical thinking skills, and foster information literacy. Additionally, special attention was given to the conscious use of internet resources and issues of digital safety.
The event was conducted in a debate format, where students were divided into two groups. One group argued in favor of the benefits of social media, while the other highlighted its negative aspects. During the debate, participants actively expressed their opinions, provided arguments and real-life examples, and engaged in meaningful discussions.
The group supporting the positive aspects emphasized the role of social media in education, information exchange, and expanding opportunities. They noted the availability of online learning platforms, access to scientific resources, and opportunities for professional development. It was also highlighted that social media facilitates communication and saves time.
The opposing group focused on the drawbacks, including inefficient use of time, the risk of addiction, the spread of misinformation, and cyberbullying. Furthermore, they discussed the negative impact of social media on psychological well-being, particularly the decline in self-esteem among young people.
Throughout the debate, students analyzed arguments from both perspectives and gained a deeper understanding of the complexity of the issue. Participants not only defended their viewpoints but also listened to opposing arguments, which contributed to the development of analytical thinking and argumentation skills.
In conclusion, the importance of responsible and safe use of social media was emphasized. The event contributed to improving students’ digital literacy, fostering critical awareness of information, and enhancing their ability to think independently and engage actively with contemporary societal issues.
