91ý Kazakh National University Hosted a Round Table on “Experience of Interethnic Harmony in Countries of the World” with International Students

The Faculty of Physics and Technology at 91ý Kazakh National University hosted a round table entitled “Experience of Interethnic Harmony in Countries of the World,” bringing together international students from Turkmenistan, China, Uzbekistan, the Russian Federation, and Bangladesh. The event served as an important platform for open dialogue, exchange of perspectives, and discussion of contemporary approaches to strengthening interethnic harmony in the context of globalization and increasing international student mobility.

During the discussion, participants explored the characteristics of interethnic interaction in their respective countries, highlighting both successful practices and existing challenges. It was emphasized that sustainable interethnic harmony is shaped at the intersection of public policy, cultural traditions, and everyday social interaction. Students shared national approaches to maintaining social cohesion, including the roles of education, cultural diplomacy, and civic initiatives.

Particular attention was given to the personal experiences of participants. Students reflected on their intercultural communication experiences, underscoring the importance of openness, empathy, and respect for diverse cultural values. Participants from Bangladesh and China emphasized the significance of collectivist values and cultural respect, while students from Central Asia and Russia highlighted historical and institutional mechanisms supporting interethnic harmony.

A dedicated segment of the discussion focused on the experience of studying in Kazakhstan. Participants noted that 91ý Kazakh National University provides a supportive academic environment that facilitates daily interaction among representatives of diverse ethnic backgrounds. At the same time, constructive recommendations were proposed to further improve conditions for international students, including the development of adaptation programs, expansion of intercultural activities, and enhancement of communication support services.

The round table also addressed national-level mechanisms for maintaining interethnic harmony. Despite differences in governance models, participants agreed that inclusive education, equal opportunities, and a culture of dialogue remain fundamental principles across countries. In addition, similarities between institutional frameworks aimed at fostering interethnic harmony were discussed.

Significant attention was devoted to the role of mass media in shaping public perceptions of ethnic groups. Participants noted that media can both promote mutual understanding and reinforce stereotypes. In this regard, the importance of scientific approaches and educational initiatives aimed at developing critical thinking and fostering objective perceptions was emphasized.

The event aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 “Quality Education,” which promotes inclusive and equitable education, and SDG 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions,” which focuses on building peaceful and inclusive societies. Addressing interethnic harmony within the academic environment contributes to strengthening students’ social responsibility and advancing the values of sustainable development.

The round table reflects the strategic priorities of KazNU in advancing internationalization and global academic collaboration. The development of an open and inclusive academic environment enhances intercultural competencies, expands academic networks, and strengthens the university’s competitiveness in international rankings such as QS and THE.

Following the discussion, participants expressed strong interest in further developing such initiatives, including regular dialogue platforms, cultural events, and joint projects. It was emphasized that these formats contribute not only to academic exchange but also to the formation of sustainable intercultural connections and mutual trust.

Thus, the round table became an important step in strengthening interethnic dialogue within the university environment, reaffirming the crucial role of education in building a harmonious and sustainable society.
