Educational event within SDG No. 15: The research potential of zoological collections as a foundation for biodiversity conservation in Kazakhstan.

On April 23, 2026, within the framework of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG No. 15 “Life on Land,” an educational event was organized for 3rd-year students of the “Zoology” educational program on the topic “Methods of studying biodiversity through zoological collections.” The event was held at the Institute of Zoology of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the guidance of master’s students Sannur Altynbekov and Viktoria Khimonen. The group is supervised by the main advisor, Sayat Yermukhanbetovich Sharakhmetov.

The field session aimed to familiarize future specialists with the methodology of storage, cataloging, and scientific analysis of biological collections as a fundamental basis for biodiversity monitoring. During the visit to the collections, students studied the principles of working with ornithological and mammalogical collections, learned the rules of labeling and preserving specimens, as well as the significance of museum specimens and oological materials (egg collections) for conducting morphometric and genetic studies. In practice, under the guidance of master’s students, participants became acquainted with archival storage of collection boxes, safety techniques, including the use of respirators when working with old collections, and methods for inventorying rare species.

The master’s students emphasized that such collections represent a “biological data bank” that allows tracking changes in populations over recent decades. The students demonstrated high engagement by asking questions about modern methods of digitizing collections and their integration into international databases. As a result of the session, participants strengthened their skills in working with primary scientific documentation, which is critically important for their future thesis work and professional activities in the field of nature conservation.
