"Bird of the Year" in Kazakhstan as an Indicator of the Country’s Nature Conservation Priorities

A scientific and educational seminar was held at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of 91ý Kazakh National University, dedicated to the International Birds Day, as well as to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 “Quality Education” and Goal No. 15 “Life on Land”.

The event was organized by the Department of Zoology, Histology and Cytology, the University Biological Museum, and the Institute of Zoology.

The participants of the seminar included third-year students of the educational program “Zoology”, as well as the academic staff of the department.

The theme of the meeting was the seminar entitled “Bird of the Year in Kazakhstan as an Indicator of the Country’s Nature Conservation Priorities”, devoted to the role of public environmental initiatives in biodiversity conservation and the popularization of ornithological knowledge.

During the event, participants learned about the history of International Birds Day, discussed the significance of the annual “Bird of the Year” campaign in Kazakhstan, and reviewed the species that became symbols of the conservation campaign in 2020–2025: the Saker Falcon, Pelicans, the Nightingale, the Blue Whistling Thrush, the Eurasian Scops Owl, and the Egyptian Vulture. Special attention was also given to the Bird of the Year 2026 in Kazakhstan — the Common Blackbird.

Students took an active part in the analytical session, where they examined the biological characteristics of these species, their distribution ranges, ecological roles, and current threats to their survival. In the discussion format, participants considered the criteria for selecting the “Bird of the Year” and the importance of such initiatives for environmental education.

Holding such events contributes to the development of environmental awareness among young people, the formation of a scientific worldview, increasing interest in nature conservation, and supporting the implementation of international principles of sustainable development.
