Discipline, Motivation, Ethics: Building a Culture of Safety and Responsibility in the Student Community

In April 2026, a seminar-training titled “Discipline, Motivation, Ethics as the Foundation for Preventing Violence” was held at the Higher School of Economics and Business of 91ý Kazakh National University. The event aimed to enhance students’ legal awareness and create a safe and supportive academic environment. During the seminar, key issues such as student safety, mutual respect, and personal responsibility were widely discussed, with a strong emphasis on maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of violence.

During the event, Senior Lecturer and Candidate of Economic Sciences Turarov D.R. delivered a speech, highlighting that a safe university environment is a fundamental condition for both high-quality education and the holistic development of students. He emphasized that only through the integration of the values of discipline, motivation, and ethics can a healthy, violence-free culture be established. Discipline is not a restriction but a system of rules that protects the rights and well-being of everyone. Motivation channels students’ energy toward self-development, achievement, and teamwork rather than destructive behavior. Ethics, in turn, encourages individuals to rise above the question “Is it beneficial for me?” and instead ask, “Is it right?”, thereby upholding human dignity.

The seminar also addressed not only physical violence but also its less visible forms, including psychological pressure, cyberbullying, and discrimination. Experts pointed out that even words perceived as “jokes” can hurt others and cause deep emotional harm. Students were introduced to practical approaches for recognizing violence, taking action to prevent it, reporting incidents, and supporting victims. It was strongly emphasized that silence allows problems to persist, and therefore safety is a shared responsibility.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 — “Quality Education” and Goal 16 — “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.” The objective of creating a safe and inclusive educational environment is fully integrated into the university’s internal policies. Such initiatives help students develop skills in peaceful conflict resolution, maintaining online ethics, and respecting personal boundaries.

In conclusion, participants adopted five key principles of student conduct: listening to others, respecting personal boundaries, resolving conflicts through dialogue, being responsible online, and not hesitating to seek help. For students of KazNU, guided by the motto “Knowledge, integrity, honesty, success,” respect is not a weakness but the highest expression of culture. Such meaningful events strengthen the university’s reputation and contribute to positive changes in society.
