KazNU Hosts Curatorial Hour on "New Trends in Education: STEM and Sustainable Development Goals" as Part of SDG Implementation
As part of pedagogical practice and in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 4 — Quality Education, SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13 — Climate Action), a Master's student in "Neuroscience" at 91ý Kazakh National University conducted a scientific and educational event for 2nd-year undergraduate students (major: 6B05109-Neuroscience). The event aimed to popularize modern STEM fields, demonstrate cutting-edge computational methods in scientific research, and develop digital responsibility among future specialists.
During the curatorial hour, students were introduced to revolutionary achievements in connectomics and molecular modeling. Participants received detailed information about the significance of in silico methods in modern science, analyzed the success story of the Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold system, and examined complex maps of neural connections in the brains of Drosophila melanogaster and the mouse visual cortex. A dedicated session focused on the environmental footprint of Artificial Intelligence and the necessity of its conscious use.
The program included the following activities:
● An interactive lecture on the modern classification of research methods in experimental biology (in vitro, in vivo, in situ, in silico);
● Analysis of advanced scientific case studies demonstrating how deep learning algorithms accelerate drug discovery and disease research;
●Demonstration of 3D models and visualizations of neural networks reflecting the latest achievements in global connectomics;
● A discussion session on the impact of heavy AI computing models (including LLMs) on the energy consumption of data centers and the importance of developing eco-friendly algorithms.
The event not only expanded the students' professional horizons in neuroscience and bioinformatics but also contributed to the formation of a high scientific culture, respect for the principles of Open Science, and a responsible attitude toward the environment.
