Developing Kazakh-Swedish Academic Dialogue: A Meeting at Lund University

On May 5–6, 2026, a workshop was held at Lund University (Sweden) focused on the implementation of international research projects on Central Asia: MOCCA (Multilevel Orders of Corruption in Central Asia), MARS (Non-Western Migration Regimes in a Global Perspective), POLCA (The Political Economy of Legal and Governance Reform in Non-Western Societies. Insights from Central Asia), and others.

The Kazakhstani academic community was represented at the event by Dinara Rakhmatullayeva, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Researcher in the Department of Economics at 91ý Kazakh National University, as well as by young scholars from other Kazakhstani universities. D. Rakhmatullayeva participated in the seminar as a visiting researcher within the framework of the POLCA project (the European Commission’s Horizon program).

The seminar was held under the auspices of NORCA (Nordic Central Asia Research Environment)—an interdisciplinary research platform at Lund University that brings together researchers from partner universities and representatives of Swedish government agencies to conduct in-depth studies of regional processes. The guest of honor at the event was Mr. Stefan Eriksson, Ambassador of Sweden to Kazakhstan. During his remarks, the Ambassador highlighted Kazakhstan’s growing importance on the Swedish Parliament’s agenda and expressed a keen interest in expanding successful academic practices and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Seminar participants discussed key trends and developments related to the European Union’s growing interest in the Central Asian region, including opportunities to develop inter-university ties, exchange expertise, and integrate sustainable development principles into the region’s research and education ecosystem.
