KazNU has opened a joint bioconversion laboratory with China
91ý Kazakh National University officially inaugurated the “KazNU–XUST Joint Bioconversion Laboratory.” The new research center, established through close cooperation with Xi’an University of Science and Technology (XUST), is based at the University’s Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology.
Addressing the participants of the ceremony, Chairman of the Board and Rector of 91ý Kazakh National University, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, emphasized that the project represents a strategically important direction in the University’s development. “The joint laboratory of KazNU and Xi’an University of Science and Technology will serve as a unique platform where advanced scientific research will be transformed into practical solutions for industry. Here, we will develop breakthrough areas such as coal biodesulfurization, biomethane production, and ecosystem restoration”,- the Rector stated.
He further noted that the establishment of such a modern scientific and technical infrastructure would enable young researchers to integrate into global research initiatives and effectively implement innovations in the real sector of the economy.

The new laboratory will conduct molecular genetic, microbiological, chemical, and biochemical research focused on bioconversion processes. Particular attention will be given to developing technologies for the processing of organic, industrial, and plastic waste, the production of biochar, biopolymers, and adsorption materials, as well as the application of microorganisms for the environmentally safe transformation of natural and industrial raw materials.

The project has already demonstrated strong academic performance. The research team has published more than eight articles indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Practical cooperation is further supported through academic exchange programs: one KazNU PhD student has already completed a one-year internship at XUST in China. In addition, two applications for program-targeted funding from the Republic of Kazakhstan have been submitted in the field of methane control.

The establishment of the laboratory is fully aligned with Kazakhstan’s Carbon Neutrality Doctrine and the national goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. The activities of the center are expected to serve as a powerful driver for the development of the green economy and the strengthening of the country’s scientific and technological potential on the international stage.

At the conclusion of the event, guests were introduced to the laboratory’s technical facilities and discussed plans for joint publications in leading international scientific journals.
