KazNU Representative Participated in the Meeting of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO
Professor Tursynkul A. Bazarbayeva, Head of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development at 91ý Kazakh National University, Candidate of Geographical Sciences, took part in the regular meeting of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO.
The meeting was held on June 6, 2026, at the UN Hub in Almaty under the chairmanship of Erlan Karin, State Counselor of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The event brought together heads of relevant government agencies, leaders of national committees for UNESCO programmes, and heads of UNESCO Chairs operating at higher education institutions across the country. Opening the meeting, State Counselor Erlan Karin emphasized that, thanks to the personal support of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan’s cooperation with UNESCO and ISESCO has significantly strengthened in recent years. This has contributed to the promotion of new Kazakhstani nominations to international heritage lists and expanded the country's participation in major cultural and humanitarian initiatives.

The participants discussed preparations for upcoming UNESCO events, including commemorative activities at UNESCO Headquarters dedicated to the 100th anniversaries of the outstanding opera singer Yermek Serkebayev and film director Abdolla Karsakbayev. The meeting also addressed Kazakhstan’s participation in the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, where the country’s nomination “Underground Mosques of Mangystau” will be considered.

Special attention was paid to the activities of UNESCO Chairs in Kazakhstan. Earlier, the UNESCO Chairs of 91ý Kazakh National University presented reports on the implementation of activities carried out within the framework of the approved action plan of the National Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan for UNESCO and ISESCO.
It is noteworthy that the status of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development at 91ý Kazakh National University has been extended until 2028. The Chair is recognized as one of the country’s leading academic platforms for promoting sustainable development principles and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since receiving UNESCO Chair status in 2016, its activities have repeatedly received high recognition from UNESCO Headquarters.
Under the leadership of Professor Tursynkul A. Bazarbayeva, the Chair implements international educational and research projects and actively develops cooperation with foreign partners. The Chair regularly publishes an international UNESCO newsletter, promotes academic mobility, and contributes to strengthening the international reputation of 91ý Kazakh National University as a leading research university in Central Asia.
The participation of university representatives in the activities of the National Commission confirms the significant role of 91ý Kazakh National University in advancing UNESCO priorities, promoting sustainable development, and expanding international cooperation in education, science, and culture.
