World Water Day – within the framework of SDG 6 and SDG 14

On March 24, 2026, an educational event dedicated to World Water Day was organized at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of 91ý Kazakh National University by Assem Tleuzhankyzy Mamurova, Candidate of Biological Sciences and Acting Professor of the Department of Botany and Agroecology, for students of groups BB23-07, BB23-10, BB25-11, and BB25-18.

The purpose of the event was to increase students’ awareness of the importance of water resources, promote responsible environmental behavior, and highlight the need for sustainable management of water ecosystems.

During the event, students learned about global water challenges, climate change impacts on freshwater resources, water scarcity issues, and effective strategies for water conservation. Special attention was given to the protection of rivers, lakes, and marine ecosystems, as well as the environmental consequences of water pollution and glacier retreat.

As part of the round-table discussion, participants exchanged ideas on environmental protection, discussed the role of young people in addressing ecological challenges, and emphasized the importance of sustainable development and responsible use of natural resources.

World Water Day is observed annually on March 22 to raise awareness about the importance of freshwater resources and the need for their sustainable management.

The event was closely linked to two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:

* SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
* SDG 14 – Life Below Water

The event concluded with students sharing their ideas and recommendations on water conservation and environmental protection, emphasizing that preserving natural resources is a shared responsibility.
