An environmental campaign titled “Clean Faculty” was held at the Faculty of Physics and Technology of 91ý Kazakh National University. The initiative was organized within the framework of promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event involved third-year students of the educational program 6B05304 – Physics, as well as faculty members and academic advisors. The campaign aimed to promote environmental awareness among students, foster a responsible attitude toward the environment, and support the principles of sustainable development within the university community.
The organizer and academic advisor of the initiative was Professor Farida Beksultanovna Belisarova, who emphasized that a modern university fulfills not only an educational function but also an important social and ethical mission. According to her, cultivating environmental awareness and responsible use of natural resources is an essential component of educating future professionals. The university environment should contribute to the development of students’ active civic engagement and encourage values that support environmental protection and sustainable development.
The primary objective of the campaign was to raise students’ awareness of sustainable development principles, promote ecological thinking, and develop practical skills related to environmental preservation. During the event, participants were introduced to the key directions of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Particular attention was given to SDG 4 — Quality Education, which emphasizes equipping young people with the knowledge, competencies, and values necessary for sustainable development. Students discussed the role of education in shaping environmental culture and highlighted the importance of scientific knowledge, innovation, and technological progress in addressing global environmental challenges.
In addition to SDG 4, the discussion also addressed several other important SDGs, including SDG 7 — Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13 — Climate Action. Participants emphasized that young people play a crucial role in promoting environmental initiatives and integrating sustainable practices into everyday life. The discussion took place in an open dialogue format, where students shared ideas and suggestions for improving environmental conditions both within the university and in the urban environment.
The practical component of the campaign included a cleanup activity on the faculty premises. Students actively participated in improving the surrounding environment, emphasizing that a clean and well-maintained educational space contributes to a comfortable and productive learning environment. During the activity, participants also discussed issues of environmental responsibility, proper waste sorting, and the rational use of natural resources. Special attention was given to the importance of developing sustainable habits in everyday life.
Students concluded that even small actions—such as maintaining cleanliness, reducing unnecessary resource consumption, using environmentally friendly materials, and treating nature with care—can significantly contribute to environmental protection. The development of such habits represents an important step toward building a more environmentally responsible society.
At the conclusion of the campaign, participants noted that initiatives of this kind encourage youth social engagement, strengthen a sense of environmental responsibility, and contribute to the development of ecological awareness among future professionals. Environmental activities within the university setting not only expand students’ understanding of sustainable development principles but also enable them to apply these principles in practice.
Thus, the “Clean Faculty” environmental campaign became an important step toward promoting sustainable development values within the university community. Such initiatives contribute to the development of environmental culture, civic responsibility, and the principles of quality education aimed at preparing a new generation of specialists capable of addressing global environmental challenges and contributing to a sustainable future.
