Curatorial Hour “Waste Sorting as a Modern Lifestyle” (SDGs 12, 13, 11)

An open curatorial session titled “Waste Sorting as a Modern Lifestyle” was held at the Faculty of Physics and Technology of 91ý Kazakh National University as part of the national environmental initiative “Taza Kazakhstan”. The session was conducted by Dinara B. Almen, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Electronics and Astrophysics. The primary objective of the event was to enhance students’ environmental awareness, promote responsible consumption, and foster ecological thinking among young people.

During the curatorial hour, participants discussed pressing environmental challenges associated with the growing volume of municipal solid waste and its impact on ecosystems and human well-being. Students examined global and national trends in waste generation, as well as the environmental consequences of inefficient waste management. Particular attention was given to the need for transitioning toward environmentally responsible behavior patterns based on the principles of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.

Students were provided with detailed information on the principles of waste segregation, including the classification of waste into major categories such as plastic, glass, paper, metal, and organic materials. The session also introduced modern approaches to recycling and secondary resource processing. The lecturer emphasized that proper waste sorting significantly reduces the burden on landfills, conserves natural resources, and contributes to lowering environmental pollution. Participants also learned that recycling processes help save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support the development of a sustainable circular economy.

A key focus of the event was the formation of environmental culture and responsible attitudes toward nature. It was noted that young people play a crucial role in advancing environmental initiatives and implementing sustainable practices in everyday life. Students discussed how simple actions—such as separating waste, minimizing the use of single-use plastics, conserving resources, and promoting recycling—can collectively contribute to environmental protection.

The curatorial session was organized in an interactive format that encouraged open dialogue. Students shared their perspectives on environmental issues, discussed sustainability initiatives implemented in different countries, and proposed ideas for improving waste sorting systems within the university environment. Particular interest was shown in developing student-led environmental projects, promoting eco-friendly habits on campus, and integrating sustainable practices into academic life.

The organization of such educational initiatives directly contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, raising awareness about responsible waste management aligns with SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production, which aims to reduce waste generation and promote sustainable consumption patterns. The educational component of the session also supports SDG 4 — Quality Education, as it equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable development. Furthermore, promoting environmentally responsible behavior contributes to SDG 13 — Climate Action, since effective waste management and recycling help mitigate environmental pollution and reduce the ecological footprint.

At the conclusion of the event, participants emphasized the importance of cultivating environmentally responsible behavior within the student community. Students noted that adopting waste sorting practices and developing sustainable lifestyle habits represent important steps toward building an environmentally conscious and sustainable society. The curatorial session “Waste Sorting as a Modern Lifestyle” thus served as an important educational platform for discussing environmental protection, sustainable development, and the role of youth in addressing global ecological challenges.
