Guest lecture on "The securities market, its functions and structure"

A guest lecture entitled “The Securities Market: Its Functions and Structure” was held by the Department of Finance and Accounting of the Higher School of Economics and Business at 91ý Kazakh National University for second-year students and first-year accelerated program students majoring in Finance. The event was organized within the framework of the “Financial Market” course and aimed at integrating the educational process with practical experience. The lecture was also conducted in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
The invited speaker was Rinat Maidanov, Deputy Head of the Supervision Department of the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE), who shared his professional experience with students and discussed current trends in stock market development, practical aspects of market functioning, modern investment environment requirements, and key areas of professional activity in financial markets. The event was organized by Associate Professor Asilova A.S., Candidate of Economic Sciences and research associate professor of the Department of Finance and Accounting, who also serves as the group advisor.
During the lecture, the strategic role of the securities market in the national economy, its institutional structure, key participants, and mechanisms ensuring efficient market operation were comprehensively explained. Particular attention was given to the functioning of joint-stock companies, international corporate governance practices, investor protection mechanisms, and modern approaches to effective corporate management. The advantages of the Dutch corporate governance model and its potential application in Kazakhstan were also discussed.
Key financial market instruments, including stocks, bonds, investment funds, and derivative financial instruments, were analyzed in terms of their economic nature, profitability, and risk characteristics. Students gained practical knowledge about capital market investment opportunities, principles of investment portfolio diversification, the relationship between risk and return, and financial risk assessment and management methods.
Based on official KASE statistical data, the development indicators of Kazakhstan’s stock market, investment activity dynamics, securities trading volumes, and the role of exchange infrastructure in ensuring sustainable economic growth were presented. The strategic importance of the securities market in efficient financial resource allocation and enhancing national investment attractiveness was emphasized.
The guest lecture enhanced students’ theoretical knowledge with practical insights, deepened their understanding of investment principles, and contributed to the development of analytical and critical thinking skills. Such practice-oriented meetings improve financial and investment literacy and support the formation of highly qualified and competitive future professionals in the labor market.
