The World of Standards and Quality: Shaping the Professional Consciousness of Future Experts
At the Department of Thermal Physics and Technical Physics of the Faculty of Physics and Technology at 91ý Kazakh National University, a significant educational and upbringing event was held as part of the pedagogical practice program — the intellectual quiz game "The World of Standards and Quality." The event was organized by Gaziza Kaseinova, a doctoral student in the "Standardization and Certification (by industry)" educational program. First and second-year students participated in this interactive educational session, for whom issues of technical regulation and metrology serve as the foundation for their future professional activities.
The primary focus of the event was the comprehensive implementation of educational and upbringing tasks facing a modern university. In an era of globalization and rapid technological progress, standardization is no longer just a set of dry technical requirements; it has evolved into a profound philosophy of responsible consumption and sustainable production. The organizer aimed not only to test theoretical knowledge but also to systematically cultivate a "quality culture" — a specific type of professional mindset where strict compliance with international standards and national regulations is perceived not as a bureaucratic necessity, but as an ethical norm and a civic duty. Future specialists learned to realize that behind every figure in a national standard, technical regulation, or certificate of conformity lies, first and foremost, the safety of human life, environmental well-being, and the long-term stability of the national economy.
The intellectual quiz program was developed using cutting-edge pedagogical technologies. The event was conducted in a dynamic interactive format, featuring active teamwork, rapid real-world case solving, and complex analytical tasks. During the game, students analyzed actual market situations in detail: they identified critical violations in consumer product labeling, pointed out errors in product certification procedures, and assessed potential risks to public health arising from even the slightest non-compliance with regulations. Such a practice-oriented approach fostered critical thinking skills, the ability to work effectively under strict time pressure, and, most importantly, the cultivation of a sense of deep personal responsibility for engineering and expert decisions.
This initiative is inextricably linked to the global UN agenda and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Primarily, the event makes a substantial contribution to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing future professionals with access to relevant knowledge and forming the competencies necessary to promote progress. Furthermore, the game’s theme directly relates to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Standardization serves as a key driver for implementing technological innovation and ensuring the global competitiveness of domestic industry. By understanding the fundamental importance of standards, students prepare to become industry leaders capable of modernizing the country’s infrastructure in line with the highest international benchmarks.
At the end of the intense intellectual competition, a winning team was identified, but the greatest value of the meeting was the deep collective reflection. Participants noted high engagement in the process and the undeniable practical significance of the experience for their future careers. For doctoral student Gaziza Ibragimovna Kaseinova, organizing this event was a crucial stage of her pedagogical practice, proving the high effectiveness of interactive game-based methods in training competitive personnel. In conclusion, it was emphasized that the formation of personal competencies and professional ethics is a continuous process that begins in university classrooms and continues throughout the professional life of a specialist standing guard over quality and safety.
