«Destructive Addiction: What Measures Are Taken to Combat Drug Abuse?»

On March 30, 2026, at 12:00 PM, a meaningful seminar was held for first-year students majoring in Mechanics, organized by curator-advisor Balzhan Akhmetova on the topic “Destructive Addiction: What Measures Are Taken to Combat Drug Abuse?”. The main goal of the event was to prevent drug addiction among young people, explain its harmful effects on individuals and society, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

During the seminar, it was emphasized that drug addiction remains one of the most pressing issues in modern society. Today, the number of narcotic substances is increasing, and the methods of their distribution are becoming more sophisticated. New types of psychoactive substances and synthetic drugs pose a serious threat, especially to young people. The issue of “pharmacy drug addiction,” involving the misuse of medications, was also widely discussed.

Special attention was given to the spread of drugs in the digital space. In particular, illegal trade via Darknet platforms, messaging applications, and cryptocurrencies was explained. These hidden methods create significant challenges for law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the issue of drug trafficking from Afghanistan and its impact on regional security was discussed.

Nowadays, the role of social media in drug distribution has significantly increased. It was noted that illegal advertisements and offers are spread through anonymous accounts on platforms such as Telegram and Instagram. These accounts often use coded language and symbols to avoid detection. Moreover, drug dealers lure young people with promises of easy money, offering “jobs” as couriers, which raises serious concerns as many teenagers become involved in illegal activities unintentionally.

It was strongly emphasized that participation in such activities, including possession, transportation, or distribution of drugs, leads to strict legal responsibility under the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan and does not exempt individuals from punishment under any circumstances. Students were also advised to be cautious of suspicious online information, avoid unknown links and offers, and improve their digital literacy.

The seminar also introduced the main directions of the Comprehensive Plan of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Combating Drug Addiction and Drug Trafficking for 2023–2025. These include strengthening preventive measures, raising awareness among youth, improving law enforcement efforts, enhancing international cooperation, and developing rehabilitation programs for drug-dependent individuals.

Students were provided with detailed information about the harmful effects of drug addiction on human health. It was explained that drug use negatively affects the nervous system, mental health, and social life. It was also highlighted that avoiding harmful habits is a personal choice that directly impacts one’s future.

At the end of the seminar, students actively participated by asking questions and sharing their opinions. The open discussion format helped them better understand the topic. Such events play an important role in fostering responsibility among young people and encouraging them to stay away from harmful habits.
