INTERGENERATIONAL CONTINUITY AS A NATIONAL VALUE: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE “ELDERS ARE OUR TREASURE” PROJECT WITHIN THE SDG FRAMEWORK
On April 3, 2026, a meaningful meeting was held at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of 91ý Kazakh National University, organized by the Department of Turkology and History of Eastern Countries, within the framework of the project “Elders Are Our Treasure.” The event took place at the Municipal Institution “Shanyrak Social Service Center” under the Department of Employment and Social Programs of Almaty, with the participation of faculty members, master’s and doctoral students.

The primary objective of the meeting was to show respect to the older generation, promote their life experience, and foster moral and ethical values among young people.

During the event, participants engaged in open dialogue with the elderly and learned about their rich and inspiring life stories. Such interactions serve as an important platform for spiritual development and guidance for the younger generation.
As part of the program, students and young researchers presented artistic performances, including poetry recitations and musical pieces, creating a warm and heartfelt atmosphere. Open conversations, genuine engagement, and mutual respect enhanced the significance of the event. In turn, the elders offered their blessings and shared valuable advice with the youth.
In addition, as part of a charitable initiative, the university staff and students provided essential medicines for the residents of the center and donated hairdressing tools used by mothers. This initiative reflects a concrete step toward strengthening social responsibility among youth and fostering a culture of compassion in society.

The event also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 “Good Health and Well-being,” Goal 10 “Reduced Inequalities,” and Goal 17 “Partnerships for the Goals.” Supporting the elderly, improving their quality of life, and strengthening intergenerational connections are key components of building a sustainable society.

This meeting once again demonstrated that the university is not only a center of education and science but also a socially responsible institution that actively promotes national and universal human values.

The project “Elders Are Our Treasure” will continue to serve as an important initiative in strengthening intergenerational bonds and spiritual continuity.
