“Taza Kazakhstan”: The Department of Economics' Contribution to Sustainable Development
91ý Kazakh National University held a university-wide community cleanup as part of the national environmental campaign “Clean Kazakhstan,” serving as a logical continuation of the initiatives implemented during the “Nauryz” period.
As President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted, “cleanliness must begin with every person and every yard,” emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in environmental matters.
This event brought together faculty, students, and staff from all university departments, demonstrating the academic community’s high level of environmental responsibility and civic engagement.
Representatives from 16 faculties participated in the large-scale campaign. Participants actively engaged in improving the campus grounds: they cleared away leaves and household waste, tidied up the areas surrounding academic buildings and dormitories, and whitewashed trees. To ensure the efficiency of the process, 12 units of specialized equipment were deployed.
The Department of Economics also took an active part in the community cleanup. Faculty and students made a significant contribution to maintaining the environmental cleanliness of the university grounds, demonstrating not only professional but also social responsibility.
In addition, as part of the “Taza Kazakhstan” campaign, specific improvement works were carried out on the grounds of Student House No. 16, where students of the Faculty of Economics reside. Participants cleaned the surrounding area, tidied up the courtyard, and contributed to creating a comfortable and clean living environment for the students.
Faculty members of the department—I.U. Kuliev, G.K. Ilyashova, D.R. Turarov, S.K. Abilda, and A.Zh. Sarsenova—took an active part in organizing and carrying out these activities. Together with the students, they demonstrated a high level of engagement and personal responsibility for the state of the environment.
This event takes on particular significance in the context of implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the initiative directly aligns with SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production,” and SDG 13 “Climate Action.” Fostering an environmental culture, developing skills for caring for the environment, and engaging youth in sustainable practices are important elements of modern education.
During the event, the Head of the Department of Economics, Ph.D. in Economics, Professor G.R. Daulieva noted the significance of such initiatives and highly commended the active participation of students and faculty, emphasizing that fostering an environmental culture is an important part of training modern professionals.
Senior Advisor of the Department of Economics D.R. Turarov, in turn, emphasized that such initiatives help foster a sense of responsibility for the environment among students and reinforce the understanding of the importance of collective action in addressing environmental issues. According to him, participation in such events instills in young people the values of hard work, mutual assistance, and a respectful attitude toward nature.
At the conclusion of the cleanup event, on behalf of the PhD advisors, G.K. Ilyashova, a senior lecturer in the Department of Economics, thanked the students for their active participation and noted that caring for the cleanliness of the environment is an integral part of every person’s civic responsibility. She also emphasized that the development of environmental awareness begins with everyday actions, such as keeping the environment clean and participating in socially beneficial initiatives.
The cleanup event served not only as a practical contribution to the improvement of the university grounds but also as an important element of educational work aimed at fostering sustainable values among future professionals.
Going forward, the Department of Economics plans to continue participating in environmental initiatives, promoting the integration of sustainable development principles into the educational and upbringing process.
