A class using virtual reality headsets was conducted

On April 8, 2026, at the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences, a lecture and laboratory session were conducted for second-year students of the Russian department in the discipline “Hydrophysics” using a VR program. The session focused on ice phenomena in rivers and lakes of Kazakhstan, as well as the processes of glacier formation and their current state.

Students virtually visited a moraine lake and the Tuyuksu Glacier, took a helicopter flight, and observed the mountainous environment. They completed the following virtual tasks: measured ice thickness using a rod and identified hazardous phenomena.

The students were impressed and were able to observe complex glaciological processes through virtual reality headsets. The session was conducted jointly by the Deputy Head of the Department for Research, Innovation, and International Relations Zh.T. Raiymbekova and lecturer M.T. Saduokassova.

Students shared their impressions of the session:

“I really enjoyed using VR headsets. It was a new and exciting experience. During the virtual hydrology expedition, we were able to see the lake and the processes occurring in it in a visual format” — Aisha Lekerova.

“The experience was very interesting and useful, as it provided an opportunity to immerse ourselves, even virtually, in the professional field and see everything with our own eyes” — Aiken Suley.

“I really liked the session with virtual reality headsets. It made it much easier to understand the material, especially processes that are difficult to imagine in a traditional learning format” — Amina Abdullayeva.
