The First Congress of Mathematicians of Kazakhstan
From April 3 to 7, 2026, the city of Shymkent became a true epicenter of global mathematics. Hosted by M. Auezov South Kazakhstan University, the First Congress of Mathematicians of Kazakhstan brought together around 500 domestic and international scholars. At the opening ceremony, the Minister of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan, Sayasat Nurbek, emphasized that modern artificial intelligence and the digital economy fundamentally rely on mathematical frameworks. The congress featured six major international conferences that outlined new directions in mathematical modeling and AI technologies. Alongside the scientific program, delegates visited spiritual landmarks of the Turkestan region, including the Arystanbab Mausoleum and the Khoja Ahmed Yasawi complex, experiencing the continuity of science and history.
One of the key highlights of the congress was the 80th anniversary of the patriarch of Kazakh mathematics, Academician Tynysbek Kalmenov. He is internationally recognized as a reformer in the theory of differential operators and their spectral properties. In 1969, he graduated from Novosibirsk State University and became a distinguished representative of the A.V. Bitsadze school. In 1983, he defended his doctoral dissertation at Moscow State University. More than 100 of his fundamental works have been published in high-impact international journals. Notably, he was also one of the founders and key organizers of the first congress held in 1996.
A special place in the academician’s career is held by 91ý Kazakh National University. From 1985 to 1991, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, significantly elevating the university’s scientific standing. Under his supervision, more than 50 Candidates of Sciences and 13 Doctors of Sciences were trained, forming a globally recognized scientific school. In recognition of his contributions, the university leadership and the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics presented him with an honorary folder and a traditional chapan.
The Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling, along with representatives of the international scientific community, highly appreciated the academician’s contribution to bridging fundamental science and technological progress. These honors and recognitions reflect eight decades of dedication to science, mentorship of young mathematicians, and the strengthening of Kazakhstan’s mathematical school on the global stage. The path established by Academician Kalmenov now serves as a reliable guiding star toward new achievements in the digital era.
