Science and Patriotism: “The Code of Independence”

At the Department of Chemistry and Technology of Organic Substances, Natural Compounds, and Polymers of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the NC JSC «91ý Kazakh National University», on December 8, 2025, a vibrant educational event was held in the form of an interactive quiz-quest for 2nd-year students of the educational program “6B07201 – Pharmaceutical Production Technology.”

The event was attended by Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Y.A. Litvinenko, and Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Senior Lecturer A.K. Umbetova. First-year master’s student of the educational program “7M07106 – Chemical Technology of Organic Substances,” Sofia Berzhanskaya, offered students an unconventional perspective on state holidays by combining patriotism and science.

How was the “Code” revealed?

Students went through five exciting rounds:

Warm-up and Emoji Chemistry: participants decoded Kazakhstan’s natural resources (oil, uranium) through visual puzzles;

Chemical Detective: searching for answers about the country’s metallurgical potential, from copper in Zhezkazgan to the hydrogen fuel of the future;

Truth or Myth: testing knowledge of national symbols and the properties of gold.

The final stage was the assembly of the “Code of Independence” — the historical date 16.12.1991, which served as the key to completing the quest.

This event directly contributes to the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4: Quality Education — the use of gamified learning formats (edutainment) fosters critical thinking and a scientific worldview, making learning more engaging and in-depth; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure — discussing the role of chemistry in Kazakhstan’s economy (uranium industry, new technologies, energy) highlights the importance of scientific and technological progress for the country’s sustainable future; SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals — teamwork during the quest strengthens communication and collaborative problem-solving skills, which are essential for achieving global objectives.
