Open Day Held at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences
On April 15, an Open Day was held at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences of 91ý Kazakh National University. The event aimed to provide career guidance for 10–11 grade students and to increase their awareness of higher education opportunities.
Students from schools in Almaty and the Almaty region took part in the event. Both students and their parents received comprehensive information about the university’s achievements, academic opportunities, admission requirements, academic mobility programs, and future career prospects.
As part of the program, the Faculty presented its educational programs in the following fields: Geography, Cadastre, Land Management, Hydrology, Meteorology, Geodesy and Cartography, Geoinformatics, Tourism, Restaurant and Hotel Business, Ecology, Natural and Technogenic Risks, Life Safety, and Occupational Health and Safety. Faculty representatives responsible for career guidance provided detailed insights into the structure, advantages, and labor market relevance of these programs.
Particular interest among participants was generated by hands-on master classes. Students had the opportunity to assemble a турист tent, explore virtual reality technologies using VR headsets, and participate in first aid training sessions. These activities contributed to the development of practical skills, broadened students’ perspectives, and supported informed career decision-making.
During the event, visitors were introduced to the Faculty’s research and educational infrastructure, including the Farabi Supercomputer Center, the Kazakhstan–China Joint Laboratory “Remote Sensing Technologies and Their Applications”, and the Research Center for Sustainable Development and Environmental Management. These facilities demonstrated the university’s strong scientific capacity, international collaboration, advanced digital infrastructure, and application of modern environmental research technologies.
A campus tour was organized, allowing participants to explore university facilities, academic buildings, research centers, and student life. The program concluded with an interactive quiz, where the most active participants received souvenirs and university-branded merchandise.
The Open Day directly contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, it supports SDG 4 “Quality Education” by increasing access to information about higher education and career pathways. Career guidance activities and practical sessions align with SDG 8 “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, helping students navigate future career choices. The presentation of advanced research centers reflects contributions to SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” and SDG 13 “Climate Action”, while international cooperation initiatives correspond to SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals.”
Thus, the Open Day served as an important platform for introducing prospective students to the university’s academic environment, scientific achievements, and professional development opportunities, while also promoting the principles of sustainable development among youth.
