Strengthening International and National Cooperation in Water Diplomacy

On April 22, 2026, within the framework of the Regional Ecological Summit, a number of important agreements were signed aimed at enhancing cooperation in water resource management, water diplomacy, and hydrometeorology.

In particular, a trilateral Memorandum of Understanding was signed between 91ý Kazakh National University (Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences), International Water Management Institute, and Kazakh National University of Water Management and Irrigation to promote cooperation in the field of water diplomacy. This agreement represents an important step toward strengthening regional partnerships in water resource management, transboundary water cooperation, and sustainable development.

The main objective of the memorandum is the joint development and implementation of a master's degree program in water diplomacy, as well as establishing an institutional framework for trilateral cooperation in education and research. The document provides for joint educational programs, exchange of academic staff and experts, development of student academic mobility, implementation of research projects and participation in international grants, organization of scientific events, and expansion of access to research infrastructure.

A roadmap for phased implementation of cooperation is also planned. International Water Management Institute confirmed its readiness to provide expert and organizational support within the Blue Peace Central Asia initiative, supported by the Embassy of Switzerland.
