Educational Event on "Legal Literacy: Student and the Law" and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
In modern society, improving the legal literacy of youth is one of the primary tasks. In this regard, a special educational event titled "Legal Literacy: Student and the Law" was organized at a high level. It aimed to deepen students' understanding of their rights, knowledge of legal requirements, and sense of civic responsibility in public life. This important gathering was initiated and organized by the experienced teachers of the "Business Technologies" department, who guided the youth. A total of 36 students participated in the event, receiving comprehensive answers to various legal questions they had. Such events have a great impact on forming a legal culture among young people.
During the event, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were widely discussed. Specifically, under Quality Education (SDG 4), the right of every student to free and quality education and their opportunities in the educational process were discussed. For Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), the rights of youth in the labor market, ways to demand safe working conditions and decent wages as future professionals, and the importance of an employment contract were explained. Additionally, issues of Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) were not left out. As the main focus of the event, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (SDG 16) was taken, highlighting the special role of youth in building a state based on the rule of law, resisting corruption, and establishing justice.
Participants comprehensively discussed the basic rights of citizens in everyday life. For example, the right to free education in state educational institutions, rights and obligations in the dormitory, as well as the right to safe, timely paid work were deeply analyzed. Everyday situations frequently encountered by students were considered as practical examples. Among them were the procedure for returning defective goods to a store (explaining that they can be returned even without a cash receipt or if it is lost), the dangerous aspects of signing various contracts without reading or fully understanding the details, and ways to avoid financial fraud. It was clearly shown how to legally protect the rights of consumers and employees in pressing issues such as an employer's failure to pay wages on time or forcing someone to work without an employment contract.
Special attention was paid to the fact that in today's digital age, it is not mandatory to go to court or stand in long lines to protect your rights. As a practical guide, students were introduced to the working procedures of state digital platforms such as e-tutynushy.kz, E-Otinish, and the "Judicial Cabinet" (sud.kz). It was noted that through these systems, any citizen can file a complaint with state bodies and effectively and quickly protect their rights without leaving home. The speakers highlighted 4 main steps for filing a complaint: First step – identifying the problem (understanding exactly that your right was violated); Second step – gathering evidence (finding screenshots, receipts, video recordings, or witnesses); Third step – the appeal process (first negotiating peacefully with the guilty party, then sending a pre-trial claim, and finally filing an official complaint with the competent state body via E-Otinish); Fourth step – control (tracking the application processing time and appealing to higher management if there is no response). These steps served as a very useful and understandable tool for the students.
In conclusion, this educational hour significantly increased students' legal literacy before the law and taught them how to protect their rights in real-life situations.
