“Soil Health Check”: Assessment of Soil Fertility on the University Campus

On April 24, 2026, within the framework of the “Taza Kazakhstan” initiative and in accordance with the action plan, a scientific and practical event titled “Soil Health Check” was held. The event focused on the rapid assessment of soil fertility on the university campus and measures for its maintenance.

The main objective of the event was to describe the morphological structure of soils within the university area, as well as to develop students’ practical professional skills.

In line with this objective, soil profile excavation (soil pit) activities were carried out on the university campus. During the study, the morphological horizons of the soil were described, and samples were collected to determine its physicochemical properties.

The event was organized by the teaching staff of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Development: B.E. Shimshikov, G.A. Mukanova, and A.A. Oshakbay. Second-year students of the educational programs 6B05202 – “Ecology” and 6B07304 – “Cadastre” actively participated in the scientific and practical work.

This event contributes to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 – “Quality Education” – through the development of students’ practical and scientific skills; SDG 13 – “Climate Action” – through the assessment of soil environmental conditions and consideration of conservation measures; SDG 15 – “Life on Land” – through activities aimed at the protection, restoration, and sustainable use of soil resources.

The event promotes the development of environmental awareness among students, encourages the rational use of natural resources, and strengthens practical knowledge in soil protection.
