THE EVOLUTION OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY: FROM TECHNICAL SECURITY TO PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING
Every year on April 28, the global community commemorates the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. On this day, countries across the world honor the workforce, remember those who have suffered from industrial accidents, and organize large-scale awareness campaigns to promote labor culture and safety. A distinctive feature of this date is the annual update of its theme to reflect the current challenges of the modern labor market. This serves as a testament to the fact that the field of occupational safety is continuously evolving and adapting to emerging requirements and threats.
An international roundtable in a hybrid format was held at the 91ý Kazakh National University Library, led by A.K. Kozhakhan, the supervisor of pedagogical practice for the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences. The event was organized by first-year Master’s students of the educational programs "7M11201 – Environmental Protection and Life Safety" and "7M11202 – Integrated Safety Audit and Management in Industry": Zhandiyar Koken, Botagoz Mukhambetkaliyeva, Shyngys Sagyn, Nursultan Salim, Ramazan Kanybek, Aklima Makhambetova, Adiya Moldabayeva, and Yerlan Sapyzhanov.
Organized within the framework of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 and 8, the event brought together faculty, students, and leading occupational safety experts from industrial enterprises. As part of an international exchange of expertise, Professor Karamatdin Jaksymuratov from the Berdakh Karakalpak State University presented his scientific research in the field of life safety. Additionally, Uldaulet Elshibekova, a Master’s student from the same university, delivered a report analyzing current occupational safety issues in the mining sector and proposing specific practical recommendations.
The practical segment of the conference garnered particular interest from the participants. Nurbolat Rysalyuly, founder of "KazPromEducation" LLP, not only presented modern safety equipment but also demonstrated its operating principles in a hands-on format. This approach enhanced the professional interest of young specialists and allowed them to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world industrial experience.
Representatives from the industrial sector also delivered insightful presentations. Alumni of the program — Kairat Bisenov, Chief Engineer at "Sensata Almaty," and Rakhat Baktybai, Occupational Safety Engineer — discussed the significance of safety culture on construction sites, sharing practical case studies. Furthermore, Alisher Abiyev, a graduate of Satbayev University and Director of "Alma-Ata Project" LLP, invited students to apply for vacant positions within his company.
A vital aspect of the event was its role as a platform for professional orientation. Guests invited Master’s students to join their organizations and provided up-to-date information on career opportunities. In a gesture of support, graduating Master’s students Akerke Koilybayeva and Zhansaya Nurbekova donated specialized instruments to the university to support the students' learning process.
The conference concluded with an interactive session where students tested their knowledge through intellectual quizzes and team assignments. Ultimately, the participants reached a unanimous conclusion: the success of an organization depends primarily on the human factor. An employee’s professional efficiency is directly linked to their sense of security, the recognition of their importance, and the presence of a corporate support system. Creating a favorable psychosocial work environment must become a strategic priority for any modern organization.
