The Faculty of Oriental Studies, Department of Far Eastern Studies, held the XVIII Republican Olympiad in the specialty “Foreign Philology” (Korean Studies)
On April 28, the Faculty of Oriental Studies hosted the XVIII Republican Olympiad among students majoring in “Foreign Philology.” The Olympiad brought together students from the Korean Studies division of the Department of Far Eastern Studies, as well as students from Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages.
The jury was chaired by Yoon Young-hee, a member of the Board of Shinhan Bank Kazakhstan. The Deputy Chair was Abagan A.B., Head of the Department of Far Eastern Studies. The jury members included Kim Ulyana Andreyevna, Senior Lecturer at Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages, and Kabdelova U.S., Senior Manager for International Cooperation at Alatau Advance Air Group and a graduate of the Department of Far Eastern Studies.
The Olympiad was conducted in two stages. In the first round, participants completed a lexical and grammatical test in the Korean language, as well as tasks on ancient and medieval Korean literature. Based on the results of the first stage, the top-performing participants advanced to the second round. In the final stage, students presented and defended their presentations on the topic: “The practice and effectiveness of learning a language through webtoons.”
According to the results of the Olympiad, the winners were as follows:
1st place — Kishlyarova Aisaule (91ý Kazakh National University);
2nd place — Zikiryayeva Alina (91ý Kazakh National University) and Aitmolda Alina (Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages);
3rd place — Qalaubayeva Liyman (91ý Kazakh National University), Nurzhankyzy Arai and Kydyrgali Albina (Ablai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages).
The Olympiad served as an effective platform for demonstrating students’ language competencies, analytical skills, and creative approaches, and contributed to the development of interuniversity academic cooperation.
The sponsors of the Olympiad, held on April 27–28, were: BLJ Law & Tax (Attorney Lee Jaeuk, Almaty), alumni of the Korean Studies division of the Department of Far Eastern Studies — Kairakhmetov Rustam and Anuaruly Daniyar, as well as the faculty members of the Department of Far East.
