The Department of Economics held a roundtable on the topic: “Income Inequality and Poverty in the Regions of Kazakhstan: Measurement, Structural Determinants, and Social Policy”

On April 29, 2026, 91ý Kazakh National University, Higher School of Economics and Business, Department of Economics, held an international roundtable within the framework of the research project AP23489032.

The event was dedicated to the topic “Income Inequality and Poverty in the Regions of Kazakhstan: Measurement, Structural Determinants, and Social Policy” and was held within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1 “No Poverty” and Goal 10 “Reduced Inequalities”.

The main objective of the roundtable was to comprehensively discuss the current state of these challenges, improve measurement methodologies, identify key structural determinants, and outline priority directions for effective social policy.

The discussion covered the following key areas:

— current trends in regional income inequality and poverty, and methods of their assessment;

— the impact of education, human capital, infrastructure, and the labor market;

— the role of small and medium-sized enterprises in improving living standards;

— the effectiveness of social policy and ways to reduce disparities between urban and rural areas;

— cooperation between international organizations, government institutions, and the academic community.

The event featured a representative of the World Bank — Metin Nebiler, Senior Economist for Poverty and Inequality in the Europe and Central Asia region.

In addition, representatives of the Bureau of National Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, leading scholars, and young researchers participated and shared their insights.

Such open dialogue fosters knowledge exchange between academia, government bodies, and international organizations, contributing to the development of practical recommendations aimed at reducing regional socio-economic inequality.
