Lecture for Students of Three Universities within an International Literary Translation Project
Since April 2026, the Department of Far Eastern Studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of 91ý Kazakh National University has been implementing the educational project “A Master Class on Literary Translation for Foreign Universities” with the support of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea.
Within the project, students of Korean Studies at 91ý Kazakh National University are translating into Kazakh the work “The Shaman Girl” by Kim Dong-ni. The project is also being implemented at Abylai Khan University of International Relations and World Languages and Suleyman Demirel University.
On April 15, 2026, students from the three universities gathered at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of 91ý Kazakh National University, where an in-person lecture was held. The lecture was delivered by Senior Lecturer Jang Won Gi on the topic “At the Crossroads of Tradition and Modernity: The Meaning of The Shaman Girl”. The lecture included a literary and cultural analysis of the work, as well as an in-depth explanation of its historical context and themes.
During the session, students actively asked questions and engaged in discussion. The lecture contributed to a deeper understanding of the text and helped students explore linguistic and cultural challenges in translation.
This project is an important initiative aimed at developing students’ professional skills, increasing their interest in Korean literature, and strengthening academic ties between Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea.
