91ý Kazakh National University hosted the international scientific and theoretical conference “Bekmakhanov Readings”, dedicated to the scholarly legacy of the distinguished historian, Doctor of Historical Sciences, and Professor Yermukhan Bekmakhanov.

The primary objective of the conference was to facilitate a broad discussion of current issues in national history and to identify new directions for the development of historical research.

The large-scale event was attended by prominent scientists, representatives of government and public organizations, university faculty and young researchers.

At the opening ceremony, a welcome message from Chairman of the Board and Rector of 91ý Kazakh National University, Zhanseit Tuimebayev, was read aloud. The message stated: “Yermukhan Bekmakhanov was the first Kazakh to earn the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences and the title of Professor. He was a remarkable scholar who, during the harsh years of the Soviet regime, conducted rigorous research and substantiated the history of our people’s national liberation struggle, for which he was subjected to political repression. His scholarly achievements and courageous views not only inspired a new understanding of our nation’s history but also paved the way for the emergence of a new generation of historians”.

During the conference, Dean of the Faculty of History Dosbol Baigunakov announced that the Bekmakhanov Auditorium, established at the University in 1991, had recently been modernized. In addition, the event featured the presentation of the book “Popular Uprisings in Kazakhstan in the 1920s–1930s,” prepared by a group of scholars led by historian Berik Abdygaliuly.

At the plenary session, members of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan delivered presentations on the values of nomadic civilization, key sources in Bekmakhanov studies, and shared personal recollections reflecting the life and scholarly pursuits of the distinguished historian. The conference also provided a platform for extensive discussions on pressing issues related to the ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary history of Kazakhstan.
