“The Chemical Challenge” Chemistry Olympiad at 91ý Kazakh National University

A Chemistry Olympiad titled “The Chemical Challenge” was held at the National Library of 91ý Kazakh National University for undergraduate, master’s and PhD students from universities in Almaty. The Olympiad was organized by JSC “D.V. Sokolsky Institute of Fuel, Catalysis and Electrochemistry” in cooperation with the Department of Physical Chemistry, Catalysis and Petrochemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of 91ý Kazakh National University. The first round of the Olympiad was devoted to solving test tasks, while the second round focused on answering logical chemistry questions.

The Olympiad has become a traditional platform for identifying the best representatives of young chemists and, in accordance with the established tradition, was dedicated to the memory of the outstanding scientist, academician, State Prize laureate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and a prominent organizer of science in Kazakhstan, D.V. Sokolsky. The Olympiad brought together 45 participants from leading universities in Almaty, including KBTU, Satbayev University, Abai KazNPU, ATU, and 91ý KazNU, representing different levels of higher education.

The welcoming address to the participants was delivered by Abilmagzhаnov A.Z., Director of JSC “D.V. Sokolsky Institute of Fuel, Catalysis and Electrochemistry.” In his speech, he particularly emphasized the importance of developing such scientific and industrial fields as chemistry, petrochemistry, oil refining, electrochemistry, energy, metallurgy, and others. He also highlighted the current state and prospects of training specialists with a chemistry background to support an independent and economically developed state.

The importance of high-quality training for chemistry specialists was emphasized by Dyusebayeva M.A., Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, who wished the participants inspiration, good luck, and enjoyment in solving challenging tasks. A brief historical overview of the Olympiad was presented in the welcoming speech by Aubakirov E.A., Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry, Catalysis and Petrochemistry, who stressed the significance of such events for motivating students and achieving high academic results, and wished all participants great success.

Representatives of the student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) at KazNU also took an active part in the Olympiad.
