The Educational Potential of Pedagogical Practice in the Context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The current stage of societal development is characterized by a focus on addressing key global challenges, including poverty eradication, health improvement, quality education, climate change mitigation, and the promotion of social justice. In this regard, in 2015 the UN General Assembly introduced 17 interrelated goals as a «plan to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all countries». These benchmarks, known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are included in the UN 2030 Agenda and represent a comprehensive global strategy aimed at improving quality of life, reducing inequality, and ensuring socio-economic well-being.

In this context, pedagogical practice in higher education involves organizing educational and extracurricular activities focused on the implementation of the SDGs, thereby facilitating the integration of the global agenda into students’ professional training. This approach aligns with the third mission of universities, which emphasizes engaging young people in socially beneficial activities and fostering their participation in the socio-economic development of society. In this regard, one of the key priorities of master’s students’ pedagogical practice is the development of competencies in organizing educational activities based on the values of sustainable development, social responsibility, and civic engagement.

On April 6, 2026, master’s students of the «7M10117-Pharmacy»educational program at 91ý Kazakh National UniversityBakhyt A.T., Koskanova A.Zh., and Serik K.under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Bayarystanova E.T. from the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Management, conducted an educational event for 2nd-3rd year undergraduate students on the topic «Multidimensional Poverty and Health».

The aim of the event was to explore the concept of multidimensional poverty, analyze its impact on public health, and examine the specifics of this issue in Kazakhstan. The event was conceptually integrated with SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), enabling participants to consider poverty as a complex factor affecting access to healthcare, nutrition, education, and living conditions.

During the session, students were provided with structured information on multidimensional poverty and its key indicators. Particular attention was given to the impact of poverty on health outcomes, including morbidity, child mortality, and overall quality of life. The use of interactive methodssuch as discussions, case studies, and problem-based questionsensured high levels of student engagement and contributed to the development of analytical skills.

The analytical component addressed both global and national dimensions of the issue, identified key risks, and proposed measures to reduce poverty and improve public health, including expanding social support, increasing access to healthcare services, and developing educational initiatives.

Thus, the event contributed to fostering a holistic understanding among students of the relationship between poverty and health within the framework of sustainable development.
