Discussing SDG 5 – Gender Equality

Issues related to the sustainable development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, namely:

• What does sustainable development include?

• What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

• What is a sustainable world? were discussed at a round table held on February 24, 2026, organized by first-year students (Group 6) of the “6B05102 Biology” program (instructors: Seitkazy E.A., Barkibayeva R.R.). Special emphasis was placed on Goal 5 — gender equality.

The purpose of the round table was to summarize ideas and opinions on the discussed topic.

During the session, issues of gender education were addressed, which have become particularly relevant in recent times. Speaking about gender inequality, student Dzhannazarova Inabat noted that it is often associated with the disadvantaged position of women in various fields, such as wage disparities, unpaid domestic labor, and limited access to leadership positions. According to the students, the causes and extent of gender inequality are influenced by factors such as societal development (socio-economic, demographic, technological), gender order, and behavioral aspects.

Students also discussed gender equality in Kazakhstan. In their view, gender equality is one of the fundamental human rights and plays a key role in ensuring peace and harmony in society based on sustainable development. Student Yendybay Assylnur emphasized that women's participation in public life contributes to increased productivity and economic growth. However, students noted inequality in hiring practices, particularly in IT-related fields, where men are often preferred over women. They also provided examples of various forms of violence faced by women.

In conclusion, students highlighted the importance of being open to discussions on gender equality. They emphasized that gender equality primarily involves solidarity and support for equal social, political, legal, and labor rights for both women and men.

At the end of the session, the instructors encouraged students to further explore topics that were not fully covered and praised their engagement, noting that their interest reflects their civic, social, and political maturity.
