From Prohibition to Strategy: Faculty Develop Approaches to Students’ Use of AI

On April 10, 2026, teaching staff of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies held a methodological seminar on the development of assignments with built-in controls on students’ use of AI. The seminar was organized by Assistant Professor Karagoishieva D.A., Assistant Professor Pshenina T.E., Senior Lecturer Torekhanova R.A. with participation of the Head of the Department, Aimagambetova A.A.

At the beginning of the seminar, T.E. Pshenina presented a ranking of assignments resistant to unauthorized AI use. Instructors compared traditional activities with newly proposed versions in order to select recommended formats for future teaching practice.

Then D.A. Karagoishieva presented practical approaches to designing assignments aimed at limiting AI-generated responses without students’ critical engagement. Faculty was particularly interested in individualized datasets for analytical tasks and creative writing prompts.

R.A. Torekhanova, continuing the discussion, outlined technological tools for detecting students’ misuse of AI. The speaker also shared her experience applying these technologies in her teaching.

Members of the department concluded that AI usage benefits students’ individual learning trajectories and enables new forms of assessment and revision. At the same time, AI encourages poorly motivated students to avoid independent or creative work. Following the seminar, the faculty developed recommendations for the next academic year. The department will implement these recommendations in line with UN SDG 4 “Quality Education”.
