Fostering the Culture of Academic Writing: Discussions within the Framework of an International Seminar

Today at 91ý Kazakh National University, the continuation of the international scientific seminar entitled “Academic Writing in Research: Effective Methods and Strategies for Writing a Scientific Article” was held, organized by the Department of Religious Studies and Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy and Political Science. This academic event was conducted with the aim of enhancing the culture of academic writing within the contemporary higher education system, improving the quality of presenting research outcomes at the international level, and strengthening the research potential of young scholars.

The event plays a significant role in the context of implementing one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — SDG 4: “Quality Education.” In particular, this goal is aimed at ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education, as well as expanding opportunities for lifelong learning. The content of the seminar contributes to the practical implementation of this goal by enhancing academic and scientific competencies, developing research skills, and improving the quality of higher education.

The seminar was moderated by PhD T.O. Amankul, who contributed to the organization and conduct of the event at a high scientific and methodological level. In addition, members of the academic staff of the Department of Religious Studies and Cultural Studies actively participated in the seminar, ensuring a substantive and productive scholarly discussion and professional dialogue.

During the seminar, the speaker — Associate Professor of Istanbul University, PhD Mustafa Jelil Altuntaş — provided a detailed analysis of the structural and compositional features of scientific texts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining logical coherence between the introduction, methodology, results, and discussion sections. Furthermore, he highlighted that citation practices are closely linked to the principles of academic integrity, explaining international standards for proper referencing and measures to prevent plagiarism.

This event was held in collaboration with the editorial board members of Eurasian Journal of Religious Studies, which is included in the recommended list of the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan: Editor-in-Chief – Nagima Zh. Baitenova, Deputy Editor-in-Chief for Religious Studies – KarlygashM. Borbassova, Executive Editor – Samet Baizhuma, and other members.

Particular attention was given to ensuring clarity and precision in research, adherence to academic writing conventions, and the consistent justification of the author’s position. The speaker offered practical recommendations for young researchers, including step-by-step planning of a scientific article, working with reliable sources, effectively addressing peer-review comments, and adapting to the requirements of international scientific journals.

In addition, the seminar addressed in detail the specifics of preparing and submitting manuscripts to high-impact journals, the stages of the peer-review process, and strategies for meeting editorial requirements. It was emphasized that the quality of a scientific article is determined not only by its originality but also by its structural integrity, argumentative coherence, and compliance with academic language standards.

The seminar also presented current approaches to the systematic presentation of research findings, methods of data interpretation, and contemporary trends in the development of scientific discourse. Participants were provided with practical recommendations aimed at enhancing their effectiveness within the international scientific communication environment.

The seminar made a significant contribution to the development of the academic potential of young scholars, the formation of a culture of scientific communication, and their integration into the global academic community. It also served as an effective platform for the exchange of experience and the establishment of professional contacts.

At the conclusion of the seminar, participants asked questions, shared their research experiences, and outlined promising directions for future scientific collaboration. Furthermore, the speaker conducted a scholarly analysis of several research works by young scholars, offering professional recommendations regarding their content, structure, and methodological foundations. This format of discussion proved to be particularly valuable from a practical perspective. It was noted that such events contribute to the development of the scientific community, the improvement of research quality, and the strengthening of academic integration.
