The Role of the Book in the Digital Age: A Roundtable at the Faculty of Physics and Technology, KazNU
A substantive roundtable discussion on “The Role of the Book in Contemporary Society” was held at the Faculty of Physics and Technology of 91ý Kazakh National University, with the participation of students and curator A.S. Taukenova. The primary objective of the event was to critically examine the significance of the book in the context of rapid digitalization, to promote a culture of reading among students, to foster critical thinking skills, and to explore the role of knowledge within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During the discussion, participants emphasized that the book remains not only a source of information but also a fundamental instrument for personal and professional development. It was noted that reading cultivates analytical thinking, enables a deeper understanding of complex scientific concepts, and enhances the ability to work with diverse sources of knowledge. This is particularly relevant for students in physics and engineering disciplines, whose academic training requires a strong theoretical foundation and a systematic approach to problem-solving.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the transformation of reading culture in the digital era. Participants acknowledged that the proliferation of electronic resources, online libraries, and audiobooks has greatly expanded access to knowledge. Nevertheless, the traditional printed book continues to retain its value, as it supports concentration, promotes deeper cognitive engagement, and facilitates the development of sustained intellectual skills. Several practical approaches to increasing students’ interest in reading were proposed, including the establishment of faculty-based book clubs, the organization of thematic discussion platforms, the integration of scientific and literary reading into the educational process, and the effective use of digital platforms to broaden readership.
Special attention was given to the alignment of reading practices with the Sustainable Development Goals. Within the framework of SDG 4 “Quality Education,” participants highlighted the role of reading in enhancing knowledge acquisition, supporting self-directed learning, and advancing the principles of lifelong learning. The expansion of university library resources and improved access to international scientific databases were identified as key factors in strengthening educational quality.
In relation to SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure,” the discussion underscored the importance of digital libraries, scientific platforms, and information technologies in stimulating students’ research activities. These tools not only provide access to up-to-date knowledge but also facilitate integration into the global scientific community, which is particularly important for future specialists in physics and engineering.
Furthermore, within the context of SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities,” the book was considered an essential component of cultural and intellectual development. Participants noted that reading contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage, enhances language literacy, and fosters an intellectually enriched environment among youth.
Throughout the roundtable, students actively shared their perspectives, discussed their favorite books, and reflected on the influence of both scientific and literary works on their personal development and professional choices. In her remarks, curator A.S. Taukenova emphasized that, despite rapid technological advancements, the book will continue to occupy a central place in human life. She encouraged students to engage in continuous self-development, to cultivate regular reading habits, and to apply acquired knowledge in practice.
In conclusion, the roundtable proved to be an effective platform for meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas. The event comprehensively highlighted the enduring role of the book in contemporary society and reaffirmed its importance in education, science, and personal development. Moreover, within the SDG framework, the book was recognized as a vital instrument for sustainable development and a key driver in motivating young people toward lifelong learning.
