Pedagogical Practice as a Means of Implementing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education

Pedagogical practice in higher education serves as an effective mechanism for integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into the educational process through the organization of educational and extracurricular activities that foster student engagement in addressing socially significant issues. An important focus of this practice is the development of competencies among master’s students in organizing educational work based on the principles of sustainable development, social responsibility, and civic engagement.

On April 14, 2026, first-year students of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management visited the Almaty Botanical Garden, where an educational event entitled «Climate Change as a Global Challenge to Sustainable Development» was conducted. The event was organized by master’s students of the educational program «7M05207-Meteorology» Altynbek A., Ragozina O., Yesmagulova Z., Sagindykova A. under the supervision of Senior Lecturer Bayarystanova E.T. from the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Management.

The choice of venue was deliberate: The Main Botanical Garden is a specially protected natural area that performs research and environmental protection functions, which made it possible to explore the stated issues within a real natural environment.

The event was dedicated to the implementation of SDG 4 «Quality Education» and SDG 13 «Climate Action». Its aim was to expand students’ understanding of the importance of education as a foundation for sustainable development, as well as to foster environmental awareness and a sense of personal responsibility for the state of the environment.

The content of the session included an analysis of the essence and interconnection of the selected goals and their role in modern society. It was emphasized that quality education contributes not only to the acquisition of knowledge but also to the formation of values, critical thinking, and readiness for responsible action. In the context of climate issues, particular attention was given to environmental education as a factor in reducing ecological risks.

The methodological framework of the event was based on interactive forms of learning, including discussions, problem-based questions, game elements, and observation of natural objects. This approach ensured active student participation, promoted the development of communicative and analytical skills, and fostered the ability to relate global sustainable development goals to everyday practice.

Thus, the event contributed to a deeper understanding of the relationship between quality education and climate sustainability, as well as to strengthening students’ awareness of the importance of professional training in shaping a sustainable future.
