On April 13, 2026, an educational (extracurricular) event entitled «The Impact of Forming a Culture of Responsible Consumption on Climate Sustainability» was held at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management for first-year students of the «Tourism» program.

The event was organized by master’s students of the «Tourism» educational program A. Serikbol, S. Berkinbayeva, K. Shedeukhan, S. Duysengaliyeva within the framework of their teaching practice, under the supervision of   E.T. Bayarystanova, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Pedagogy and Educational Management. Faculty members of the Department of Recreational Geography and TourismR. M. Baiburieva, Zh. N. Aliyeva, and Sh. T. Abdreevaalso took part in the event.

Substantively, the event was implemented in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12 «Responsible Consumption and Production» and SDG 13 «Climate Action». The issue of transitioning to rational consumption models has gained particular relevance, as the modern economy, based on the intensive use of natural resources, continues to exert significant anthropogenic pressure on the environment.

Teaching practice in higher education serves as an important mechanism for integrating the principles of sustainable development into the educational process. Through the organization of educational activities, conditions are created for students to comprehend contemporary global challenges and their professional significance. This approach corresponds to the third mission of universities, which focuses on fostering youth social engagement and their involvement in socially significant activities. In this context, particular importance is attached to developing master’s students’ competencies in designing and implementing educational work grounded in the principles of sustainable development, social responsibility, and civic engagement.

During the event, students were introduced to the theoretical foundations of a culture of responsible consumption, its role in ensuring climate sustainability was elucidated, and opportunities for the practical application of sustainable development principles in everyday life were discussed. As a practical example, the activities of the Fabriqa textile collection box, aimed at waste recycling and the implementation of circular economy elements, were presented.

As part of the event, an экскурсия (study visit) was organized to the Center for Sustainable Development and Rational Use of Natural Resources, where participants became acquainted with its key areas of activity, ongoing projects, and environmental initiatives. This contributed to reinforcing theoretical knowledge through practice and deepening understanding of the issues discussed.

Overall, the event was content-rich and practice-oriented, contributing to the development of students’ environmental culture, fostering an understanding of sustainable development principles, and recognizing their significance in future professional activities. The activity also strengthened students’ value orientations in the field of sustainable development and expanded their understanding of the role of responsible consumption in ensuring climate sustainability.
