Visit to the Goethe-Institut: Exploring German Literature

On April 22, 2026, third-year students of the Faculty of Philology at 91ý Kazakh National University, majoring in Foreign Philology, visited the Goethe-Institut in Almaty. The purpose of the excursion was to introduce students to the institute’s library, which offers extensive opportunities for the in-depth study of the German language, literature, and culture.

The Goethe-Institut is a modern cultural and educational space for German language learners. The library is open to visitors and offers free registration. With a library card, users can borrow books for a period ranging from two weeks to one month. The collection is diverse and meets modern educational standards. In addition, the institute offers German language courses at various levels and prepares candidates for international examinations required for admission to foreign universities, including institutions in Germany.

A special highlight was the “Bibliothek der Dinge” (“Library of Things”), which allows visitors to borrow not only books but also useful items such as a guitar, sewing machine, tennis equipment, tent, speaker, mixer, and more. The library provides a comfortable and well-designed environment: silence, cleanliness, charging stations, and cozy reading areas support effective learning. The needs of readers are carefully considered, including age, language proficiency, and individual preferences. The library offers audio and video materials, educational games, works by German authors, as well as literature related to Kazakhstan. The poem “Kulager” by Ilyas Zhansugurov is available in German translation by Gert Heidenreich.

The excursion made a strong impression, demonstrating the scale and high level of organization of the library, as well as the values of responsibility and order characteristic of German culture.

We express my sincere gratitude to the head of the library, Sholpan Kyzaybayeva, and staff member Dina Madenova.
