The 26th meeting of the COMSATS Coordinating Council was held in Surabaya (Republic of Indonesia) at the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS). The meeting was attended by a delegation from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, representing the Republic of Kazakhstan in the COMSATS network of Centers of Excellence.

The Coordinating Council of COMSATS (Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South) is one of the largest international intergovernmental organizations uniting states and leading scientific and educational centers of the countries of the Global South in order to develop science, technology and innovation for sustainable development.

The delegation of al-Farabi Kazakh National University included Kuanysh Tastambek, Director of the Department of Science and Innovation at the University, and Nuraly Akimbekov, Director of the Center for Islamic Science and Innovation.

The main purpose of the event was to discuss strategic directions for the development of international scientific and technical cooperation, the implementation of joint research programs and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through science, technology and innovation. During the meeting, the participants reviewed the results of COMSATS activities for the period from October 2024 to May 2026. The issues of developing a network of Centers of Excellence, expanding international research consortia, and implementing joint scientific and technical projects were also discussed. Special attention was paid to the development of industrial biotechnology, climate research, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy, water security, food systems and sustainable development. One of the key items on the agenda was the presentation of the activities of the COMSATS Centers of Excellence over the past two years. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University presented achievements in the field of scientific research, innovation, training of scientific personnel, development of international cooperation and implementation of projects aimed at solving urgent socio-economic and environmental problems. The participants were particularly interested in the university's initiatives in the field of digitalization of science, the use of artificial intelligence in scientific research, the development of supercomputing technologies, biotechnologies, environmental monitoring and the training of highly qualified specialists of a new generation.

During the event, representatives of KazNU took part in a discussion on the prospects for creating new international research platforms and academic mobility programs, and also considered the possibilities of expanding the university's participation in COMSATS international grant initiatives. They also held a number of working meetings and consultations with the heads of scientific organizations and universities of COMSATS member countries, during which they discussed the prospects for implementing joint research projects, organizing international conferences, researcher exchange programs and training scientific personnel.
